Figures from the Reserve Bank appear to show that households are trying to keep their credit card balances down in the face of higher interest rates.
The average amount owing on a credit card in April was $3,085, up 5.2 per cent from the year before.
But that is the slowest growth rate since records have been kept over the last 13 years.
Some economists say the figures show that consumers are restraining their debt levels.
